Eternal Security
Getting to the Principles
In society there are many people who identify as Christian although they don't have a personal relationship with Jesus and have never been born again. They may have been christened as a child or have gone to Sunday school but later in life they decide Jesus isn't for them and stop identifying as a Christian. These people have not lost their salvation because they were never saved to begin with and this is not the group in focus.
The principle of eternal security goes much deeper than two teams of theologians batting Bible passages back and forth at one another and of the many articles on this subject you can find, few address the bigger picture.
When you strip this doctrine down to its bare frame you are left with the choice of two options
Option One; Salvation is given by God initially to a man who believes but from then on he must work hard for the rest of his life to prove he still deserves it by living a life that that is pleasing to God otherwise he will forfeit his salvation and be lost.
Option Two; Salvation is a gift given by God to man when he believes then God maintains his salvation for the rest of his life.
If the first option is true then you can lose your salvation quite easily because keeping your salvation depends on you. It's like being given a tray of eggs to carry for the rest of your life knowing that if you break too many the game is over. To make matters worse, no one can tell you exactly how many eggs you can break before you are consigned to hell fire neither do you have any definite way of knowing if you've made it or not until after you die. You don't get a letter of dismissal, you just have to wait and see.
If the second option is true and keeping your salvation depends on God then the only way you can lose your salvation is if one of the members of the Godhead has failed in Their work.
To understand this choice properly we need to have a look at the mechanics of salvation.
